Blog 18 Creative Camera Use
As our chosen band is punk/rock we had to create some effects along with filming and editing.
Below is the link of a short presentation I created explaining the effects we used and what their purpose was:

Blog 17 Rejected Footage
Here are some of the footage we decided not to use because of bad mise-en-scene such as lighting, locations or acting:
Clip 1:
We decided not to use this shot because of the bad acting and lighting:

https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vYzY3NjEyN2UtMGExZC00N2I5LWEwNzgtNzY2NTNmYjgwNmFm&hl=en
This was a shot taken on a very sunny and bright day. We used that lesson to experiment with the cameras and tried to make some effects with the light of the sun. However this wasn’t a good shot as it’s very bright and the character cannot be identified.
Clip 4:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vMDdiN2JlYTMtODQ4Yi00NDgxLTgwYzUtZWI1M2Q4YmZjMDgw&hl=en
This shot is from the band performance in the TV studio at college. The reason we didn’t use it is because it’s been disturbed by our teacher dropping one of the equipments during the take. This was also disturbing for the bassist performance as he was distracted by the falling equipment in front of him. We thought this was bad acting and it wouldn’t suit the target audience.
Clip 5:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vNjA4ZmRkODQtOTYzNS00MmYzLThmN2YtYmZkMzNlNmRkMTE5&hl=en
This shot was also taken on a very sunny day and we made a few experiments with the camera to achieve some extra effects. However the sun was in our eyes and both the camera girl(Chantalle) and I (the girl in the shot) couldn’t really see what was going on. We decided not to use any shots with sun light as we thought it wouldn’t fit Green Day’s genre.
Clip 6:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vZDc5MmEzYjgtMDhmZC00ODI3LTlhZTAtZjg0MWM0ODE0NDkz&hl=en
This was a very short shot filmed in the college buttery. At first we decided to make a few group shots of the girl and her friends in places like the buttery or library to show that she’s enjoying herself with other people and to contrast this with one shots of the boy walking around on his own. However when we started editing the video we decided not to include this shot as we thought the acting was bad and wouldn’t appeal to Green Day’s audience.
Clip 7:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vNmUwNGMwMGEtNGM3OC00OWJkLWJmZTgtM2M1N2RjNGU5NTQz&hl=en
Most of the footage we didn’t use was because of bad acting. In this clip we thought the acting was pretty bad and unprofessional. I think this happened because we didn’t really plan the shots with the new boyfriend as we found the boy at the last minute.
Clip 8:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vMDEzMzNkZWQtODYwYy00ZGFmLTgyODAtZmQ0MDMyNTgzYTlm&hl=en
This shot was from the band performance and we wanted to take a few extreme close-ups of the music equipment as most Green Day’s and other punk bands’ videos have lots of band performance and they always turn the audience attention to the music equipment (part of the mise-en-scene). However this shot wasn’t filmed well because it’s going from one equipment to another and this could be a bit confusing for the audience as the artists aren’t identified. A better scene would have been if it was going from a member of the band and then to his equipment.
Clip 9:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vNjI2ZWM1ODYtYmY5NC00ZDFhLTliZjAtZTViNTI4YjgwYzZm&hl=en
This shot was the opposite of Clip 8 as we wanted to get a close-up of the drummer’s face. However the shot was ruined by the bassist’s guitar which was in the way and blocked the drummer’s face. We thought this wouldn’t appeal to the audience, as they like to see the band’s performance and reactions and when they are not visible it could be disappoint the target audience.
Clip 10:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B1JR4gOQbA9vMWQ1ZGU3YTYtZmEyMy00MGEyLTkyNDYtYTY5NDUzMjhmMmY1&hl=en
The purpose of this shot was to take a close up of the vocalist’s guitar. However the guitar wasn’t visible even though the zooming was smooth.

Blog 16 Advert
The second part of our A2 media project is to make an advert for the digipack we created.
To do this, analysis of 2 existing adverts of the same genre was required.
Here is the first advert I'm going to analyse:

This single full page advert for Green Day is promoting their album '21st Century Breakdown' from 2009.The band name written at the centre at the top is in the same graphite font as the album. This makes it more eye-catching and recognisable for the target audience. The title '21st Century Breakdown' is written in bold graphite font, which is stereotypically associated with the punk/rock genre and appeals to the target audience, connoting they like graphite styles and punk music.
The other titles such as the strap line 'THE WAIT IS FINALLY OVER', the name of the album and the date of its release are written in a similar graphite font and the colours are the same as the background colour, which creates a messy and rocky, but not too obtrusive atmosphere.
The main picture of two lovers kissing is taken from their 21st century CD album, which makes Green Day to be recognised by the target audience. The picture is in sketch and the wall behind used as a background creates the punk atmosphere. The black colour around the image fits with the punk genre and also creates a contrast with the white and yellow fonts used in the advert.

The second advert I chose for analysis is by the alternative rock band Kings of Leon. The cover image contains of 4 smaller images which make up the whole image. It shows part of each member's face and there's an eagle in the middle connecting the parts together. This image shows some details of each member in unique way different to other adverts of the same genre.
There's only one font style used throughout the whole page which makes the advert look simple. The main information is written underneath the picture and there's big line spacing so it doesn't make the advert look too obtrusive
Flat plans:

For this flat plan i will use a picture of the band performing in the video. The lighting will be the same as the video so the audience can easily recognise the advert. The image will be spread all over the page and the cables from the quitars will be around pointing towards some of the text(webpages at the bottom). The font styles used will be the same as the digipack so there's a link between the two media products. There will be some information about when the video is coming out and it wil be written in a different to the other texts font so it stands out and it can be easily spotted from the target audience. The background of the image will be black so there's enough contrast between the text and the back and fits with Green Day's genre.

This is the second flat plan I had in mind for Green Day's advert. As the music video and the whole album share the same name 'Whatsername',I thought it would be very conventional to put an image of the girl. Her front won't be visible so it creates some mistery and she will be walking down a road connoting she's running away or disappearing. The mise-en-scene will be the same as the narrative part in the video. The girl will be wearing the same casual clothes as the video so the audience can recognise her and memorise the scene. The shot will be taken from the video and I will put a blurry effect on to try convey the meaning of the song.Fonts of the title of the band and album will be the same as the digipack and the releasing font will be written in a big different to the others font style so it outlines and creates a contrast.

For the third flat plan for my advert I decided to use a shot of the vocalist from the music video we are creating. It will be a similar shot to the picture on the back cover of the digipack but it will be taken from a different angle and it will be in colours similar to the colours in the video rather than the colours in the digipack. For the name of the band I will use the same graphite font as my digipack so they could be linked and catch the audience’s attention. The title of the album and the actual video will be written in different font at the bottom followed by some additional information underneath such as Green Day’s webpage. As Green Day have been on Kerrang’s cover many times, I decided to put the magazine’s logo underneath the band’s name so it can promote the magazine and will be more eye catching because of the positioning underneath the letters. The fonts used will be similar to the fonts I’ve used in my digipack. The mise-en-scene such as locations, costumes, equipment will also be linked with the video and the digipack. This advert will include the release data of the DVD album and it will be written in a bigger font with a shadow as this will suit the punk genre and will appeal to the audience. I will place the release data in such angle that will be the first thing the audience will look at as it informs the audience when the album will be out.
