Blog 5 Target Audience of Artist/Band

Band:Green Day
Genre:Punk/rock

I have checked Green Day's official page on facebook to see how many people are fans. There are more than 6 million people both males and females on facebook who like the band.

I have also asked 40 students(20 females and 20 males) from college whether they are fans of Green Day and it turned out that boys are the majority who listens to Green Day and generally rock/punk music.Although not only boys are listening to punk music, but also many girls nowadays are keen on rock and punk too and their numbers are growing rapidly.

Green Day is one of the most successful punk bands and magazines don't miss the chance to publish them on their cover so they can attract more and more fans and encourage them to buy the magazines. Here are some of UK's rock magazines that have Green Day on they covers:

NME Target Audience:

Demographic Classifications:
I have used the NRS website to find out about the demographics for NME audience:
The Demographics classifications show that 294000 are readers aged 15-44 and 31000 are over 45.The table also shows that the magazine appeals mainly to men with total of 241000 and 84000 who are women.

Socio-Economics Classifications:
218000 readers are classified as A,B, and C1 and 107000 as C2,D and E. ABC1 are people with a high status and high disposable income in society such as doctors, lawyers and business workers.
The other 107000 readers classified as C2,D and E are people with a lower status in society and lower wages( people without an university/college degree)

Kerrang Target Audience:

Demographics Classifications:
There are 258000 Kerrang male readers and 164000 females. This again shows the big difference between males and females and their interests. There are 389000 both male and female readers aged 15-44 and only 32000 that are aged 45+. We can again see that this magazine attract more young people.

Psychographics Classifications:
In the UK Kerrang magazine is published by Bauer Media(www.bauermedia.co.uk) and has become the world's selling rock magazine. It usually comes under 'Mens Entertainment' Section.

Kerrang appeals to a specific audience, because it concerns people who are interested in rock and its background. The Audience Profile is described as 'Individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty.'

I've also looked into Green Day's verified account on Twitter.

There are 912604 followers and 13016 who are listed. This is again a huge number of Green Day's fans.

Follow Kerrang Magazine on Twitter: www.twitter.com/kerrangmagazine

Socio-economics Classifications:
218000 are classified as A,B and C1( people with high status in society and high wages) and 203000 classified as C2,D and E(people with lower status and lower wages). We can see there isn't a big difference between the upper and lower class so this suggests that Kerrang is a trusted music magazine and even lots of lower class people buy it.

Blog 4 Permission

Copyright has always been a big issue for the Music Industry.Copyright is needed so that people cannot steal other people's work and effort. In this case it is important for the Music Industry so other artists cannot copy or steal a song without a permission.

We have to write an e-mail to the music company so they can let us use the song we've chosen to make a music video:

'Dear Sir/Madam

I am an A2 student at Lewes Sixth Form College and we have been told to ask you for copyright permission for our media coursework portfolio. We are doing a music video for 'Whatsername' by Green Day.

Many Thanks

Blog 3 Song Choice

In our third media lesson we had to put ourselves into groups of 3 or 4. I chose to work with Marcus and Chantaelle as they are both into rock/punk music and I thought it would be great to work together as a team.We had a discussion about what rock/punk bands we like and agreed to do a song by the band Green Day.The song we decided to do is 'Whatsername'. We chose this particular track as it has no music video so we can create something completely new and unseen. Green Day is one of my favourite bands and I am sure we will do a great job.Besides both Marcus and Chantaelle are big fans of GD,so we are going to have a nice and enjoyable time working together as a team. We couldn't decide at the beginning what song we actually wanted to do.We wanted to make a video for 'Macy's Day Parade' but it already had a video. The other option was 'Extraordinary girl'.

Here are the lyrics of our chosen song:

Whatsername by Green Day

Thought I ran into you down on the street
Then it turned out to only be a dream
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
I remember the face but I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been
Seems that she disappeared without a trace
Did she ever marry old what's his face?
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
I remember the face but I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been
Remember, whatever
It seems like forever ago
Remember, whatever
It seems like forever ago
The regrets are useless
In my mindShe's in my head
I must confess
The regrets are useless
In my mindShe's in my head
From so long ago(Go, Go, Go, Go..)
And in the darkest night
If my memory serves me right
I'll never turn back time
Forgetting you, but not the time.

Blog 2 Exploring Music Video

At the end of the first year we had a few introduction classes to A2. We watched a documentary of the worlds best videos and analysed some of them.

Here is the analyse of the first video I picked:
'Crazy in love' by Jay Z and Beyonce
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6HPJJjqvG0&ob=av2e .

It's a fast song about love and adrenaline and the audience is usually female teenagers aged 14-18 who are fans of pop/ r&b music and want to have Beyonce's look and attitude. She's represented as a rude r&b and extravagant girl who doesn't care about anything and nothing can stop her because she is 'crazy in love'.

The second video I've chosen to analyse is 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_MuUcxHATo&ob=av2e

This was number 1 video of the documentary. The audience of this video will be young people both males and females. It's about teenagers going through changes e.g.body changing, transition period. This video normally won't be accepted by parents and older people as it contains horror but this is what made it interesting for young people as it shows something different and in a way dangerous.

The third video is Karma Chameleon by Culture Club:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmcA9LIIXWw&ob=av2e

The genre of this video is dance music from the 80s when people grew tired of the serious music and wanted something new and different. The audience will be people aged 20+ as teenagers still wanted the heavy sound. This video could link with the gay culture as the guy singing wears make up which suggests he's gay.

The last video I've picked is Don't Speak by No Doubt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR3Vdo5etCQ&ob=av2e

The target audience is usually female teenagers as the song is about love, breaking up and friendship issues and they're often a problem in teenagers' life. The genre of the song is rock and we could see this as the band play on a guitar throughout the whole video and on stage.

Blog 1 Introduction

For our second piece of coursework we have been told to do a promotional package for the release of an album which should include a music promo video, together with a cover for its release on DVD digipack and a magazine article. This coursework portfolio is a development of my skills from the AS coursework task. Here is a link of my previous blog
